Bon Accord is a small town of about 1,500 people on Highway 28, roughly 40 km north of downtown Edmonton. Highway 28 starts at the Anthony Henday at 97 Street and runs north past CFB Edmonton to town, so the route is simple even though it is roughly 55 km from our south Edmonton yard. The town itself is compact, numbered streets and avenues around 50 Avenue, with Woodglen on the northeast side and businesses along the Highway 28 frontage. In 2015 Bon Accord became Canada's first International Dark Sky Community, which means the town keeps its outdoor lighting under control to protect the night sky. On short winter days we would rather finish the heavy carrying in daylight, so for a December move we may suggest an earlier start.

Bon Accord takes its name from the motto of Aberdeen, Scotland, “Bon Accord”, or good agreement, chosen by the Scottish settlers who farmed the district in the late 1800s. It became a village in 1964 and a town in 1979, and in 2015 it was named the first International Dark Sky Community in Canada. It is a quiet town, and a move here comes down to planning the drive and planning the house.
The road in: Highway 28
Highway 28 begins at the Anthony Henday where it meets 97 Street, on Edmonton’s north edge, and runs north past CFB Edmonton straight to Bon Accord before joining Highway 28A near Gibbons. From our yard in south Edmonton the whole trip is roughly 55 km, about 44 minutes each way, so we count the drive as part of the job and set the start time around it. Moves are billed hourly, and the round trip adds about 1.5 hours of travel time.
That straight road is also handy for regional moves: Gibbons is about 7 km away by the Town’s own count, Morinville is just to the west, and Fort Saskatchewan and St. Albert are both close enough for an ordinary moving day.
Around town
Bon Accord covers only about 4 square kilometres, laid out in numbered streets and avenues, with the Town office on 50 Avenue. Addresses use the rural T0A postal prefix.
Downtown and 50 Avenue. Centennial Park, behind Food Town at 49 Avenue and 50 Street, and Veterans’ Memorial Park at 51 Street and 51 Avenue sit near the middle of town, with Roseglen Park and Springbrook Park a few blocks away along 52 Avenue. We ask about driveways and frontage and plan where the truck stands before the day.
Woodglen and the school streets. Woodglen is on the northeast side of town. Bon Accord Community School is on 57 Street and Lilian Schick School is on 54 Avenue, so if you live near either one, tell us: we would rather not stage a moving truck in the middle of the school drop-off.
Acreages around town. Bon Accord is ringed by Sturgeon County farmland, and we move acreages as well as town homes. Tell us about the driveway, the yard and any shop or outbuilding when you ask for a quote, so the estimate covers everything that needs to move.
Dark skies and short winter days
Bon Accord’s Dark Sky designation recognises the town’s outdoor lighting rules and its work to keep the night sky dark. That is good news for stargazers and a small planning point for movers: on a December afternoon it gets dark early, and we would rather carry a dresser down the front steps in daylight. For winter moves we may suggest an earlier start so the heavy work is done before dusk.
