How to prepare your home for sale

How to prepare your home for sale

If planning to prepare your home for sale and increase its appeal to potential buyers, you need to follow a few steps to ensure that your home stands out and is more likely to sell quickly.

  1. Declutter
  2. Decluttering is important to reduce distraction and enable viewers to focus on the space rather than its contents. This involves removing day-to-day items such as piles of letters and excessive toiletries from the bathroom, as well as keeping hallways clear of excess and unused clothings. Professional Movers Edmonton can help in this.

  3. Depersonalise
  4. Depersonalising your home is also crucial, as it allows viewers to imagine themselves living in the space without being distracted by personal items. This can involve removing family photos or other items that make it obvious the home belongs to someone else.

  5. Enhance Lighting
  6. Improving lighting is another key step in making your home more appealing. Natural light should be maximized by opening blinds and curtains, and extra floor and table lamps can be added to brighten up darker rooms. Bright rooms create a sense of spaciousness, which is important for potential buyers.

  7. Use Fragrances
  8. Sorting out any unpleasant smells is also crucial, including eliminating bad smells like pet odors or mustiness, and avoiding overwhelming good scents. Ask neighbours or friends to honestly identify any lingering odors that are noticeable.

  9. Make To-Do List
  10. Completing any outstanding home improvement tasks is essential. This could include fixing broken doorknobs or light bulbs, repainting a room, or repairing any damage that may cause concern for potential buyers. This will ensure that your home is well-maintained and in good condition, which can help it sell more quickly. You can take assistance of affordable long distance movers in Edmonton.

  11. Take Inspirations
  12. Drawing inspiration from small tweaks in appearance can have a significant impact on how your home is perceived, just like how simple tasks listed above can make a massive difference. Focusing on minute details can make a huge difference. But, identifying those details can be a challenge. You don't want to overdo things. Therefore, looking for inspiration is the solution.

  13. Focus on Neutrals
  14. Paying attention to the smallest details can make a big difference. However, pinpointing those details can be challenging, and you don't want to go overboard. Neutrals may appear boring but are sure to make your area look spacious.

  15. Generate focal points
  16. Don't assume that your home needs to be completely restrained just because you've opted for neutral colors. Generating focal points in your living space can be an effective way to enhance the overall ambiance and you don't need to hire an interior designer to do it.

A stunning window or an intriguing original fireplace can do the job. Highlight and make them easily visible. A vibrant artwork on the mantle can help draw the viewer's attention towards it. Plants are another option to consider. Have some fun with this but keep in mind, simplicity is key.

  17. Minimize the Presence of Your Pets
  18. We understand that pets are part of the family, and we're on your side when it comes to all things. However, not everyone shares the same affection for pets, so it's best to downplay their presence in your home when preparing for a sale. Items such as pet beds and litter trays can potentially turn off potential buyers. Therefore, it's recommended to tidy up and remove as much pet-related items as possible before any viewings.

  19. Highlight Storage
  20. Highlighting your storage options is important when preparing your home for sale. It's not just about showing potential buyers where your storage is located - you can take it a step further. Spend some time organizing your storage areas before viewings. Consider using racks, drawers, hangers, and other storage solutions to make the most of your available space.

If your storage spaces are cluttered and overflowing, consider renting a short-term self-storage unit. Remove as much as you can, keeping the house as minimal as possible - even the loft! If self-storage is not an option, ask a friend or family member to store some of your larger items for the open day. Kids' stuff like high chairs, prams, and toys can take up a lot of space, so it's worth getting them out of the way if possible.

  21. Emphasize continuity
  22. When preparing your home for sale, continuity is a critical yet intangible element that is as important as the tangible objects we have discussed earlier. But what exactly is continuity? At its core, continuity refers to the way potential buyers move through your home. It is your responsibility to ensure that this movement is smooth and engaging.

A straightforward way to evaluate your home's continuity is to put yourself in the shoes of potential buyers. Step outside your property and enter it as if you were seeing it for the first time. How does it feel? Are there any obvious obstacles that affect your movement from room to room? Identify and address these issues to enhance the continuity of your home. It's that simple.

What Our Clients Say About Last Stop Moving.

Clients Feedback

Hiring a professional mover will result in a less stress and an easier, safer move all around. Moving can be both emotionally and physically draining, and handling delicate or bulky items with care requires specific moving skills and experience. Moving safely and successfully requires specialized equipment and experience, not unlike other trades.

Usually, a sales representative will be able to give you a good idea of a price range over the phone. But for the most accurate estimate, Last Stop Moving recommends an on-site appointment to review details of your move.

Moving labor represents the majority of the moving expense. However, you should also budget for packing supplies, such as moving boxes and tape, and for additional valuation (moving “insurance”) as needed. Last Stop Moving takes special precautions with delicate or oversized items, such as flat screen televisions and chandeliers.

With years of experience, our sales teams pride themselves on providing the most accurate moving estimates in the industry. Our proprietary sales system ensures that we work closely with every customer to fully understand his/her moving needs and to provide a moving estimate that reflects those needs. Be sure to offer as much information as possible at the time of the estimate, including reviewing the inventory for accuracy. Neglecting to mention additional items, or difficult areas of access, at the time of the moving estimate almost always results in unexpected costs for the customer.

It is best to schedule your move two weeks in advance, but we will work with you to help you secure the day you need. If you are moving out of state, we recommend scheduling your free onsite estimate 1 month in advance.

Although Last Stop Moving will take every necessary precaution on your move, unexpected damage can occur; and it is important to make sure that your possessions are protected. We are able to offer valuation (“moving insurance”) to our customers at a very fair price due to the very low number of claims we file.

It is best to schedule your move two weeks in advance, but we will work with you to help you secure the day you need. If you are moving out of province, we recommend scheduling your free onsite estimate 1 month in advance.

This depends upon many factors including: weather conditions, loading and unloading obstacles, direction and distance your shipment is traveling, size of your shipment, stairs or elevators involved, how many boxes need to be moved and if you need packing services. For an accurate estimate, please call our office to schedule a free onsite estimate.

Last Stop Moving is experienced at moving these specialized items. However, these items should be boxed or crated prior to our arrival to ensure their safe transportation. Please call us for information on preparing these items.

Last Stop Moving will move large silk floor plants, but desk sized silk plants must be boxed prior to our arrival. Live plants should be transported by you to ensure a safe arrival.

If you are unable to take immediate possession of your new home or office, your belongings can be stored for a reasonable fee. Storage must be requested prior to your move day so that all charges are made known and all corresponding documents are completed. You are responsible for the pick up, insurance, storage, and final delivery fees.

Items such as fuel, oil, propane, ammunition, paints, pesticides, liquid detergents, bleach, and cleaning supplies cannot go on the moving truck. Liquid containers that have already been opened are also not allowed on the moving truck. Also, we do not move articles of intangible value such as: jewelry, cash, stamp collections, credit cards, documents, ammunition and guns. We recommend keeping all irreplaceable and expensive items with you.

We offer fully trained and professional packers at a reasonable rate. We can pack your entire home/office or just specific areas to meet your needs. It is best to get an estimate for this service. Get a free estimate now.

Yes! We offer a large variety of packing boxes and supplies, as well as, a free box delivery to your home/office with a minimum order. Any unused supplies will be deducted from your invoice if they are returned when the movers arrive. Check out our Packing Supplies options.

We recommend scheduling your move as far in advance as possible. The farther out you can plan your move, the greater the availability you will have in choosing a date and time that is convenient for you. A general rule of thumb is to contact us no later than two weeks in advance of your desired move date. We realize advance planning is not always possible, and do our best to accommodate last minute customers as well.

Because complex events, such as a home closure or completion of construction, can be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, we don’t recommend scheduling your move for the same day. Save yourself the stress of rescheduling and plan your move date for several days after your closing date. Demand for moving services is generally at its lowest during the middle of the month and, in particular, the middle of the week. If your schedule allows for a move on one of these days, Movers often offer their most competitive rates during those times.

Focus on packing, instead of moving. Smaller items and moving boxes can be moved very quickly by professional movers. Don’t spend time trying to move these items yourself. Rather, focus on packing boxes, so when the movers arrive, you are 100% ready. For more information on packing and packing supplies check out our Packing page and tips.

Choose a simple labeling system (i.e. MBR for Master Bedroom) and make sure that all of your boxes are clearly marked. Boxes should be labeled on the top and 3 sides. Your movers will work closely with you at the destination to make sure everything ends up where you want it.

It is generally fine to leave clothing in dresser drawers during the move. Be sure to remove anything from the drawers than may roll around or shift during transport, as this can cause damage. If the dresser is particularly large (a triple dresser or part of a large armoire), it is best to at least partially empty it.

Last Stop Moving, as well as all other licensed movers, will not move hazardous or combustible items such as propane tanks, firearms, paint, and aerosols, as the temperature in the truck could cause these items to explode or ignite.

When the movers first arrive, they will do a walkthrough of your current home with you, confirming which items are going and which are not.

If your moving day is rapidly approaching and it becomes clear that you will not be fully packed, it is critical that you inform your move coordinator as soon as possible. He/she can work with you to make the best possible “plan b” for packing. This may mean having the movers finish your packing or, if you have the flexibility and we have the availability, pushing back your moving day in order to allow you more time to pack. If you have only a small quantity of items left to pack, your movers can often complete this on moving day; however, it is important to understand that this will add time to the job and, therefore, add to the total cost of the move.

Absolutely! When we deliver your items to your new home, the movers will work closely with you to make sure all furniture and boxes arrive in the correct rooms, and we are happy to arrange (and rearrange) the furniture exactly as you would like it.

On moving day, the professional movers should handle the job entirely. They are highly trained and the best suited to carry the weight and negotiate the loading of the truck. Generally speaking, having non-professionals work alongside the movers slows things down and costs you more in the long run. Your friends and family can be most helpful in preparing for the move – packing moving boxes or caring for your pets or children.

Unfortunately, professional moving companies cannot transport customers in the moving truck for liability reasons.

While professional moving companies may vary, at Last Stop Moving we clean up any clutter we create during the moving process. However, we do not do general house cleaning. We recommend asking your friends, family, and neighbors for a referral for this type of service.
